Disability misconception tag.

Hi guys.

Today I present to you a tag which you may or may not have heard of. It’s the disability misconception tag!!!!

I don’t center all my posts on wordpress on the topic of disability. But I found this tag on a few other disabled blogs and decided to give it a go. I apologize in advance for I don’t know who exactly created the tag. But I just hope I don’t get sued.

So with out farther ado!!! Here’s the tag.

What is your disability and how does it impact on you?

my disability is retinopathy of prematurity. Or more commonly known as ROP. This means that I’m only able to see light, and some unclear shadows. I think the biggest way my disability has inpacted me is my access to education, and my desire to prove people wrong. When you’re disabled society dictates so much of what you can and can’t do. So I want to prove to people that being disabled shouldn’t stop me from achieving my goals.

As I always tell people just cause I can’t see doesn’t mean I’m not a human. IF you pull back my skin, and layers of muscle tissue. I promisse you’ll find blood just like yours.

2. What is the most common misconception that you come up against with your disability?

There’s many misconceptions. From can I do work? To will I be fit to have children one day. But I think the biggest misconception I’ve faced is people treating me as less or unequal.

I wrote in my poem. Dehumanize It makes me feel invisible when people don’t include me in their conversation. I’m not saying you need to talk to me constantly. But acknowledgement would be nice, you know? It’s nice when someone goes out of there way to make me feel included.

3. Which misconception annoys you the most?

This would have to be people who assume that just because I’m disabled I can’t have sex!!!! Like I’m blind!!! there is nothing wrong with my ability to have sex!!! Or those who think that disabled people can’t be gay!!!

Again I’m blind!!! That has nothing to do with my sexual orientation. And honestly?? YOu don’t need to know anything about my sex life!!!

4. Do you do anything to combat these misconceptions?

I educate people as much as possible. I blog and use this platform to advocate, and to sho that disabled people are just like the rest of the population.

5. What more do you think can be done to tackle the misconceptions surrounding your disability?

The way blind people Are portrayed in the media. I think that if more and more blind people are shown as capable, and confident people, who can achieve anything they want. Then these stereotypes will be abolished. Also the limited resources for people who are disabled to learn about their bodies, and about sex. there’s no sex education for those who are disabled,. Or if there is then it’s extreamley limited.

The LGBTQ people need to acknowledge disabled individuals. They need to realize that disabled individuals are also part of their community.

and here you goooo!!!! Love? Hate? Comment dow below what you thought.
